My friend Elaine came over tonight, and we had a really good, long visit. Luckily for her, she ate dinner before she arrived. For while I said I was making meatloaf for dinner, I had assumed it would be finished in a timely manner. Not so. I broke out my crockpot and tried my hand at making a meatloaf in it. Unfortunately for me, I did not read the directions to the chosen recipe very well. (This has been losing me points on math tests for ages.) While I read, "Cook 1 hour on high," I did not read, "and then cook for 6 hours on low." Blasted slow cookers. I adjusted things and watched it and cooked it reasonably enough. My ancient meat thermometer, which came from my Grandmother's kitchen and looks to be from the 1960s, said it reached the needed interior heat. Or as Natasha said, she didn't think we'd get worms. Oh well, I'm sure it will reheat nicely for dinner tomorrow. The meatloaf wasn't supreme, but my mashed potatoes were. Too bad they finished several hours apart.
Pictured to the left is me lifting said meatloaf out of my crockpot...
Why did you not just turn on the oven? Meatloaf in a crockpot is not right. Good luck next time. M

I liked the meatloaf. It was rare but flavorful.
Note: Everytime I hangout with Claire I am reminded that I need to catch up on my blog reading. There is something powerful about writing stuff down and then sending it out into the world, plus then you feel like you have said it and you don't have to keep repeating it. Like meat loaf in the crock pot for only 3 hours.

Mother, yeah, I know, the crockpot meatloaf is a little unnatural. I'm not sure what I was thinking at the time. I'm pretty sure I wasn't, except that I hadn't had meatloaf in ages and wouldn't that be nice to make?
Elaine-- I'm glad you at least enjoyed it.

I, too, thought it was pretty good. And it is always fun to play around with new kitchen gadgets. I would play with meatloaf, given a new gadget. I love meatloaf, and I love the idea of a crockpot. But perhaps this is a bad marriage - something like too many good things. Maybe it went the fate of the lobster ravioli or whatever bullshit that guy was serving you in D.C. along with fried Oreos.

I love your meatloaf story! But I flew into an eye-rolling, head-snapping 30 second scream at these words, "My ancient meat thermometer...looks to be from the 1960s..."
All I have to say is, I know where your cubicle is located!..."ancient...from the 1960s" Young whipper-snapper!
